Why is Ed the Bears Beach so Special?

Ed the Bear lives on Shoreham Beach in the county of Sussex which is on the south coast of the UK. This beach is a nature reserve because of a habitat called vegetated shingle, which is rare. This habitat is made up of over 90 different plants that are able to survive on the beach. They grow from the top of the beach all the way down to the high tide mark.

Vegetated shingle habitat is also rare globally and is only found in the UK, New Zealand and Japan. Many types of insects and birds visit the plants, for shelter, to pollinate the plants or to feed on the seeds.

The Friends of Shoreham Beach, who help run the
nature reserve, are very good at looking after
the plants and making sure people don't damage
them or harm the wildlife. But Ed the Bear becomes
increasingly  concerned about the threat from global
issues and how they might affect his beach.

Especially climate change, which could cause sea level
rise and create powerful winter storms that could
wash the shingle beach away.

The information Ed the Bear finds on the internet
and by watching news programmes is all very
confusing to Ed. Infact, nothing actually explained
how the oceans affect our weather and climate.
How can we know if we are damaging out climate if
we don't know how it is created?

One thing is certain, climate change is a global problem so the Friends of Shoreham Beach send Ed the Bear off to find experts who can explain to him more about these global problems and most importantly, how they might affect his own beach at Shoreham and what we can do about the them

More on that later. Ed the Bear has learned just how important temperture can be and how very small changes in temperature can cause very big changes such as more storms, coastal erosion aan flooding.

The main part of this projects charts Ed the Bear's travels and experiences, wildlife encountered and knowledge he gathers. This is then shared via his weblog, visiting schools and other groups and at special events.
