STUDYING AND PROTECTING THE OCEANS

During his travels, Ed the Bear has meet many people who are helping the oceans. He has meet many scientists who are monitoring the health of the oceans, often using technology ranging from equipment deployed in the ocean (see right) to monitoring our planet from space.

Ed the Bear has also met many people who rescue and care for turtles and sea birds and much more. Although we can't all rescue and care for marine life we can all help.
Many of the problems in the oceans are caused by changes in our climate due to our modern living. These are man-made pollutants We can all reduce our impact by living more sustainably.

Living more sustainably

Ed’s message is a positive one. We can’t all go out and rescue turtles or grow corals but we can do things that are just as important.

Having raised awareness of these issues Ed aims to encourages children (and adults) to think about how they could do things differently to live more sustainably and have less impact on the oceans and the environment. They are encouraged to make a list and sign a pledge to Ed the Bear. The list is then pined up at home (or the classroom) in a prominent place as a reminder. Living more sustainably is only really effective if the whole family (or school) is involved. Encouraging sustainable living in the young will hopefully embed good habits that will remain into adulthood.

Television, computers and game consoles are fun, but we can save energy and money if we remember to turn them off when we are not using them.  We may not be using them but they are still using electricity, even on standby mode.

Recycling not only saves energy and resources, it also helps to reduce the amount of plastic debris that ends up in the oceans

We should also save water too as it is our most valuable resource. Bella Bears World or Water explores freshwater habitats, how we use water and how we can use this valuable resource more wisely.

Bella has also travelled to the Peru Amazon and Madagscar
