THE FRIENDS OF ED THE BEAR

Ed the Bear spends a large part of the year travelling around the world learning about marine life and investigating conservation threats to the ocean. However, the wildlife and coasts around the UK are just as fascinating and valuable as the global places he visits.

Ed the Bear is based at a very special beach at Shoreham in Sussex. The beach is also very important because of the rare vegetated shingle habitat. However the whole of the UK coastline is also just as valuable and Shoreham Beach is a tiny part of this.

Infact the UK has around about 11,073 miles or about 17,820 kms of coastline. It is made up of rocky shores and cliffs, sand beaches and bays, sand dunes and pebble beaches. There are also harbours, estuaries too.

ED THE BEAR NEEDS YOUR HELP

11,000 miles is a lot of coastline to explore, so Ed the Bear is enlisting the help of children and their 'bear friends' around the UK to visit these beaches and make a report, story or display about their local beach. This may be individual children, schools or at special events.

They will be the Friends of Ed the Bear. They will discover what the beach is made of, the different types of animals that live there, how people use the beach and any fascinating history such as lighthouses, piers and other structures.  They will also need to investigate any dangers to the beach and beach wildlife.

RUFF HELPS ED THE BEAR EXPLORE WEST BEACH IN SUSSEX

In 2012 the first of the Friends of Ed the Bear helped Ed explore the West Beach Local Nature Reserve. Here are a few pictures from this adventure.

So while Ed the Bear is travelling raising awareness of global locations and marine conservation, the Friends of Ed the Bear will also  be raising awareness of the wonderful beaches and fascinating wildlife we have on our own coast in the UK.

If your school or group would like to help Ed the Bear by exploring your own local beach, please contact us for further details
